Description

I had an expert come and look at this mount and we have determined that it is indeed a reproduction that has been made to look old. It is a very nice and well done reproduction made to be period correct, but a repro never the less.

Yes the main body of item is cast steel. All other parts are steel as well. The expert determined that this was a Period Correct Reproduction instead of an Original due to 2 main reasons:

1) The style of the font used in the number stamp was not correct for the "4" during WWII. Additionally the raised strike area of the numbers if an original would have been less pronounced due to years of handling, where these still had well struck edges.

2) The remaining (not ground down) contour found on all the reproductions in the transition area of the left side about 1" away from the rear thumb screw was just barely visible. Originals are near flat in this same area.

The expert commented that this was perhaps the best modified current reproduction mount that he had ever seen due to the following reasons:

a) All reproductions lack the correct counter bore for the screws, which make them stick up where as the originals all have flush fitting screws into the rings.

b) Part does have period correct bluing and all other milling / grinding marks are consistent with the originals, which was why we all hoped this was an original.

c) The wear pattern in particular was exactly as you would find on an original in terms of metal wear and polished effect / thinner areas on the bluing.

We did place both an original and a reproduction No. 32 scopes into the mount. The reproduction sniper scopes fit perfectly, where the original scope (we only had one to try) was very tight and would likely need some hand fitting so we did not want to force it in.

Item shows advanced knowledge of the originals and expertise in fabrication / simulation of a war time style of wear pattern.
