MFI Scope Mount / Rail for Finnish Army Target / SAKO / Mosin Nagant bolt action rifle M28-76 or M28/76.

No we do NOT also reproduce this above dove tail scope base. This base has to pre-exist on your weapon for our product (or the original scope mount) to fit.

This product is a direct result of my personal love for this weapon and the 7.62 X 54R sniper round. If you do not have one of these rifles you are really missing out. They were built as target / sniper training rifles, but have also been used in early Olympic Competition as Biathlon rifles (before they went to .22 LR) and even deployed as Sniper Rifles with the retro fitted tapering dove tail scope mount base.

The problem was finding anything that would mount to this rare scope base. Basically you only had one choice which was an Original Finnish Army Scope Mount with built in rings. Unfortunately these mounts if you can find one cost over $500.00 and are antiquated at best. I say antiquated as this weapons platform is still very viable and at $850.00 (what I paid for mine) performs as good as my $3500.00 SAKO TRG22 out to 400 meters.

The Original mount restricts you to using a 26mm tube scope (also antiquated) that in no way could ever perform up to the accuracy of this rifle. So I looked for 2+ years then decided to take a chance and make one for myself.

First I had to buy an original mount @ $535.00 (for sale if someone wants it) to be sure we knew everything there was to know about this platform.

So I came up with my own designs. I figured if I wanted one then there must be a few other who were like minded. I made only 25 units of each version. After all I think there are less than 500 M28 - 76 target rifles in the USA with this added dove tail base.

This is the 1913 Picatinny Version.

Click the link above for the Classic Thumb Screw version.

I came up with 2 very similar designs: One with the Original Style Thumb Screw mounting point and a more Modern Version with an uninterrupted rail.

The 1913 Picatinny Version Mount was designed with the intent that it would be seen sort of as the next logical step for this weapons platform after the MFI Thumb Screw version. Obviously by 1976 the 26mm tube scopes were being replaced with fully adjustable and far more accurate and adjustable sniper & target scopes. So this would be the next natural progression / evolutionary step for this weapon system. Thus the reason why I eliminated the Thumb Screw Style lock down. This way you get much more rail to position your scope onto.

Things you need to know and understand about the original mount / rings:

  • Rings were permanently mounted and completely non adjustable.
  • Rings were 26mm only.
  • Rings have ZERO horizontal adjustment.
  • Rings were adjustable for windage as few scopes of the period had windage adjustment. This adjustment adds $$$ to the cost of producing the mount and rings.
  • Scope mount is NOT quick release. The lever you see is used to force the mount forward or backward and usually required a hammer to do it as the dove tail is NOT a straight simple dove tail. The dove tail is TAPERED / gets more narrow as it goes forward. This same lever does NOTHING to hold the mount in place. It is strictly a lever to supply pressure / movement forward into the tapering dove tail.
  • The Thumb Screw is what hold this mount in place. It sits in an oval shaped groove in the dove tail base (see above photo). Thus there is nothing other than the downward pressure keeping the mount from slipping backward in the oval groove. Obviously this is why they felt they needed the addition of the tapering dove tail to in essence become a compression fit.
  • The type of scope required for the original mount also has to have a 3/4 forward style turret. Meaning that the turret for elevation (again no windage turret) was mounted in the forward most 3/4 on the tube. NOT like current style scopes that have the turrets CENTERED on the tube for maximum eye relief adjustment. This is because the dove tail base is mounted so far forward on the receiver.

We overcome all of these short falls and try to bring this weapons platform out of the 1970's and into the modern age where it belongs.

I am fully aware of the PURESTS who insist on ORIGINAL ACCESSORIES ONLY... well this mount is NOT intended to please you in anyway. I am strictly trying to provide a Cost Effective & Viable Alternative with No Compromise in Accuracy or Quality for the Real Shooters of these rifles out there who want to see what their weapons can really do.

Here is what I came up with:

  • We REPLACED the Thumb Screw with a large counter sunk set screw, which is completely hidden in the rail.
  • The large set screw serves the exact same purpose in the exactly same manner as the original thumb screw did.
  • We added a second Socket Head Cap Screw which REPLACES one of the screws in your dove tail base. This bolt screws directly into the receiver which eliminates any chance of slippage / loss of zero.
  • The Rail is Weapons Grade Steel, which is important as you will have to use a block of wood and a hammer to drive the tapering dove tail forward enough to engage the second bolt.
  • We kept the tapering dove tail to original specifications as it was part of what kept the mount in place (force fit). Obviously for those of you who want a slightly more removable scope rail you can adjust the taper by filing it down to be looser. This is 100% OK to do as you also have the second screw as a positive lock.
  • Rail is extended from the original 2.75" long to 5 inches. We extend it in both directions to allow for the greatest versatility to use conventional sniper scopes and most night vision scopes.
  • Rail is 1913 Picatinny in configuration / spacing so you can move your existing sniper scope to this rail without loosening your rings (assuming eye relief is ok).

Additionally we made these with the LOWEST PROFILE possible so that they do NOT interfere with the open / iron sites when a scope is not in place. The profile is so low that there is no reason to remove the mount once it has been attached to the weapon system as it does not interfere with any normal function or cleaning.

Lastly: 100% Picatinny / Mil. Spec. 1913 Correct. Meaning that your expensive LaRue or SWAN Throw Lever / Quick Release / ARMS Scope Rail Mount will lock 100% the way it was intended. We have seen the influx of hundreds foreign made mounts, rings, risers, rails etc. that claim to be Throw Lever compatible but, are NOT. This one is 100% COMPATIBLE!

We also sell a variety of Scope Rings to accommodate most any Scope on the market. Be sure to check these out as we supply photos of several with this mount and rings attached. Diagrams with complete measurements are there to guide you to the right set up.

Instructions

The Original AV1 Scope mount is NOT quick release.

Likewise our scope mount WILL most likely require you to use a HAMMER & a BLOCK of WOOD to force it forward enough to LINE UP with the screw hole in the receiver.

The wood is used to protect the metal of the scope mount from being damaged. Place a small block of wood at the end of the mount and strike the wood with the hammer to force the mount forward. This will wedge the mount tight into the tapering dove tail. If you are using the forward most hole in the receiver you will need to look down through the mount to see when the hole lines up. Obviously remove the small receiver screw first.

The Allan Key / Hex Key size for the socket head cap screw the mates with the receiver is 2.5mm.

The Allan Key / Hex Key size for the Large Set Screw that we supply is 5/32.
