This is an 1/1 scale direct Copy of an Antique 1858 Whitworth Cannon / Mortar Black Powder Firing Mechanism. It differs from the original only in that it is designed for mortars with smooth bores in that instead of a huge internal gas check plug (impractical / impossible to install on a 60mm, 81mm or Bowling Ball mortar due to limited internal space to place the plug in from the inside). Mine uses a simple ½ X 20 thread that screws directly into the cup / body / tube of the mortar and is held there by those same threads.

This ½ X 20 threaded part / adapter incorporates the hole for a plasma jet from a 12 gauge primer (the same as use in Remington and Thompson Center Black Powder [BP] muzzle loading rifles in current production). This is a separate part that can be unscrewed from the body of the Whitworth Mechanism and you could make your own gas check plug for use on a cannon or other device where internal pressures are much higher due to rifling. I have tested this extensively and it works 100% and shows no sign of any wear over the 300+ rounds fired from my modern M57 Yugo 60mm Mortar launching 5 lbs.+ projectiles.

I use the ½ X 20 as it is common and super strong.

The opposite end of the ½ X 20 that threads into the main body of the Whitworth is threaded with a standard 3/4 X 10 tpi.

For those of you who already have a 1/4 hole for a fuse drilled in your device you can enlarge that hole to the ½ X 20 thread and if you choose to move back to a fuse or friction primer you can just buy a standard bolt from the hardware store and drill the appropriate size hole for the fuse or friction primer.

I am trying to keep the Mechanism simple (like the original) to be reliable and versatile for many other applications.
